The Daily Show Continues to Showcase Diversity of Comedians

The Daily Show has been criticized in the past for having a shortage of women on its staff. It seems that the show’s producers and Comedy Central have taken these complaints seriously, hiring three women to join the program as correspondents and occasional contributors. The addition of Olivia Munn, Sarah Vowell, and Jessica Williams might still not completely satisfy critics, but in the interest of fairness we must at least acknowledge that the show is creating more opportunities for young female comedians.

In fact, if you look back at the past 5-6 years, of the last nine hires that the show has made to fill positions as correspondents and contributors, only one of them - Josh Gad - is a white male. There’s definitely an aura of diversity to the program that, I think, has been largely underreported.

We must give Jon Stewart and company their due for highlighting and showcasing some of the talented “others.” The industry is better for it.
